PRE-PROCEDURE SUPPLEMENTARY COMFORT STRATEGIES
Topical numbing ointment is usually enough to minimize discomfort during your treatment at MSU Aesthetic & Laser Treatment Center. However, for deeper treatments, your provider may recommend additional pain management strategies to keep you comfortable and aid in recovery.
IMPORTANT SAFETY REMINDERS
- DO NOT take ibuprofen (or similar NSAIDs) if you have a history of stomach ulcers, GI bleeding, or bariatric surgery.
- DO NOT take Tylenol (acetaminophen) if you have liver disease or a history of hepatitis B or C.
- Please be aware of restrictions and consult with your medical provider before making changes to any preexisting medications.
SUPPLEMENTARY COMFORT STRATEGIES PROTOCOL
A combination of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as ibuprofen, and Tylenol (acetaminophen), can safely keep you clear-headed but comfortable during and after your appointment. Follow the instructions below for OTC supplementary comfort aid:
Two Hours Before Treatment (with food)
Take one of the following:
- Two (2) Extra Strength Tylenol (500mg) OR
- Three (3) Regular Strength Tylenol (325mg) – Total 1,000mg
AND two-three (2-3) ibuprofen (200mg) – Total 400-600mg
After Your Procedure
- Six hours after your pre-procedure dose (about 4 hours after treatment), you may continue this regimen every 6 hours as needed.
- Reduce ibuprofen to one (1) tablet (200mg) every 6 hours.
- You may use Aleve (naproxen) instead of ibuprofen if preferred.
Maximum Dosages (Do NOT exceed in 24 hours)
- Tylenol: Eight (8) Extra Strength (500mg) OR twelve (12) Regular Strength (325mg)
- Ibuprofen: Six (6) tablets (200mg)
Itch Relief During Skin Recovery
If itching occurs, you may take 25-50mg of Benadryl every six (6) hours as needed.
⚠️ Benadryl may cause drowsiness. DO NOT drive or operate machinery.
If you have any concerns or experience unusual symptoms, contact your provider immediately.
